Anyone who has ever read a newspaper knows that the title is designed to capture your attention and make you want to keep on reading. On your podcast, your episode titles and descriptions are just as important to convince the readers that they should click on your podcast and give it a try. Understand what it takes to promote your podcast content.
Episode notes
Podcast are audio content but before a user will click on your podcast and download it, he or she will visit your Web site or blog and read the episode notes, or show notes. If you've ever written a blog post you're familiar with writing episode notes, an episode note is simply the information that is presented beside each episode of your podcast. Episode list are designed for the web, they should be easily scannable. Break up the description of your podcast episode with bold titles, bulleted list and attention getting sub-headlines. The content should be a brief outline of what the podcast will be covering.
When writing your episode notes take a trick or two from writing press releases. In press releases, you start by writing out the most important information, and then work backwards. You also should include your company logo on the page to build awareness. Pictures draw attention to your episode notes, especially if it's on topic. If your blog is about gardening and you use a picture of a flower from your garden, it’s a great tie in. Just like writing a blog, you can also choose to tag keywords at the end of your episode notes in order to help get indexed search engines and help people find your content when doing keyword searches.
Promote your podcast
To get your podcast more attention you have to work to promote it around the World Wide Web. Make sure to add your podcast to several podcasting directories in order to help users easily find your podcast and updates online. If you are a member of forums catering to your industry be sure to include your podcast link in signature post and when commenting on others blogs. Take advantage of signature lines in your email address as well to quickly get out word about your podcast to all work and personal contacts.
If you are already using press releases and writing articles and submitting to article directories use them to get free advertising. Write relevant articles and include a link to your podcast, use a press release to introduce your new industry podcast and include a link to your podcast in more general press releases you write.
Promoting your podcast offline
To truly promote your podcast you may need to go offline. Business cards and flyers are one of the simplest ways to get any product in front of a potential customer, by giving out business cards at conferences, seminars, parties, local business meetings and other offline activities you can expose your podcast to an audience that might not normally seek out a podcast for information.
